An article by the famous composer politician and activist Mr. Mikis Theodorakis to the world media entitled
“THE TRUTH ABOUT GREECE”
There is an
international conspiracy targeting the total distraction of my country. They started in 1975 aiming at
the Modern Greek Culture, they continued with
the distortion of our recent history and our National identity and now they are trying to wipe out
our biological existence through unemployment, starvation and wretchedness. If the people of Greece would not rise to stop them,
the thread of the disappearance of Greece, is real. Personally, I place it within the next ten years. The only legacy that will remain from our passing will be our civilization and our struggle for freedom.
There was no financial problem till 2009. The big issues of the economy were excessive spending for weaponry and corruption of some
politicians, businessmen and journalists. For these, the responsibility lies with foreigners like the Germans, French, British and Americans that made billions of Euros at the expense of our National wealth, from the annual sales of weapons. This continues bleeding, brought us to our knees and prevented our progress, while enriching foreign countries. The same with the problem of corruption, as in the case of the
German Siemens that had established a special department to approach and bribe Greek officials to achieve preferential treatment in the placing of their products in the Greek Market. The victims of course of this double act of Greeks and German robbers, were the people of Greece on whose back they were getting rich.
It is apparent that these two great carcinomas could be avoided, if both
pro-American political parties were not infiltrated by corrupted elements that, in order to cover-up the flow of wealth (the product of the hard work of the Greek people) towards the coffers of foreign countries, were resulting to excessive borrowing and thus they brought the public debt to 300 billion Euros or 130% of GDP.
In this way, the foreigners I mention above, enjoyed double the benefits On the one hand the profits from the sales of weapons and of their products, and on the other, the interest of the loans,
to the government and not to the people, because as we have seen, the people were the victim in both cases. One only example suffice to prove this case. The interest of a loan of 1 billion Dollars that
Andreas Papandreou borrowed from a large European Country in 1986, reached
54 billion Euros. The loan was finally paid off in…2010.
Mr.Juncker said a year ago, that he identified the bleeding of the Greeks form the excessive (and compulsory) spending for the purchase of war materials from
Germany and
France specifically and concluded that in this way the “vendors” are leading Greece to guaranteed destruction. He further confessed that he did nothing about it as he did not wish to harm the interests of friendly, to him, countries.
In 2008 the big financial crisis took place in Europe. It therefore followed that the Greek economy was also effected. In spite of that, the standard of living in Greece, listed amongst the 30 richest countries, basically remained the same, but the public debt went up.
However, public debt does not necessarily lead in financial crisis. The debt of big countries like
USA and
Germany is numbering trillions of Euros. The question is whether or not there is growth and production. If so, one can borrow from the big banks at an interest rate of up to 5%, until the crisis is over.
At this stage we were in 2009 when we had a change of government and G. Papandreou become prime minister. In order to realise what the Greek people think his catastrophic policies today, I give two figures. In the 2009 election PASOK won 440% of the vote. Today opinion polls register 6%.
Mr. Papandreou could face the economic crisis (that as I said was a reflection of the European) with loans from Foreign Banks at the usual interest of under 5%. Had he done this, our country would have had no problems. In fact, the opposite would have happened because we were in a face of growth of the economy that for sure would haw improved our living standards further.
Mr. Papandreou however, had already began his conspiracy against the Greek people from the summer of 2009, when he had a secret meeting with Strauss-Kahn aiming at placing Greece under the guardianship of the IMF. The information regarding this meeting was released by the former chairman of the IMF.
But, in order to arrive to that point, it was necessary to distort the true financial state of our country in order to alarm foreign banks resulting in the increase of the interest rate of borrowing to unsustainable levels. This burdensome operation began with the false increase of the public deficit from 9.2% to 15%. For this criminal act, the public prosecutor Mr.Peponis,officially charged Mess’s. Papandreou and Papakonstantinou (Minister of Finance).
What followed was the systematic campaign by Mr. Papandreou and his finance minister that lasted
5 months and aimed to convince the Europeans that
Greece was a “Titanic” ready to sink, that the Greeks were
corrupt and lazy and therefore incapable to dill with the needs of the country. Every time they opened their mouths, the interest rate went up, so we could not borrow any longer and thus our referral to the IMF and the European Bank took the form of “salvation”, but in true, was the beginning of our death.
In May 2010 the infamous Memorandum was signed by a sole minister, in other words the total submission to our lenders. The Greek law demands that in the cases of important agreements or treaties, a 3/5 majority vote in Parliament is needed. Therefore in substance, the Memorandum and the “Troika” that today govern Greece, are operating illegally according to the Greek, but also the European law.
From then till now, if the steps leading to our death are 20, we have already climbed more than half of them. Just imagine with the memorandum we present the foreigners with our independence, our public ownership. In other words we give them our Ports, Airports, Road network, Power plants, water, our mineral wealth and so on. Even our historical monuments like the Acropolis, Delphi, Olympia, Epidaurus… we have waived the right to object.
Production has stopped, unemployment has climbed to 18%,
80,000 shops have closed, thousands of workshops, hundreds of industries. In total,
432,000 businesses have finished. Tens of thousands of young scientists leave the country that day by day sinks into medieval darkness.
Thousands formerly prosperous citizens look for scraps in the garbage and sleep on the pavements.
In the meantime we supposedly exist by the grace of our lenders, Europe, the Banks and IMF. In actual fact, the tens of billions Greece is borrowing, immediately returns were it came from, while we are burdened with new unbearable interest. Furthermore, in order to sustain the functions of the state, the hospitals and the schools, troika levies new unbearable taxes on the solders of the financially weaker that directly lead to starvation., Total state of starvation we had at the beginning of the German occupation in 1941 claiming
300,000 dead in a space of six months The ghost of that period returns to haunt our slandered and unfortunate homeland.
If one thinks that the German occupation caused 1,000,000 deaths and the total destruction of our country, how we Greeks could accept Mrs Merkel’s threats and the German intention to impose a new “gauleiter”… this time in a suit and tie.
In order to prove how wealthy is Greece and how hard working and conscious are the Greeks (conscious of duty to Freedom and love of his homeland) I refer you to the period of the German occupation from 1941 to October 1944. When the SS and starvation killed 1,000.000 citizens and
Wehrmacht was destroying the country systematically, was stealing the production of the land and the gold from the Banks, the Greeks rescued the population from hanger by establishing the “movement of National solidarity” and a partisan army 100,000 strong, that pinned in Greece 20 German divisions. At the same time, not only the Greeks managed to survive due to their hard work but also there was great development of the Neo-Hellenic art under the occupation conditions, especially in the areas of literature and music.
Greece, selected the road of self sacrifice for freedom, but at the same time that of survival.
Then, as now they hit us without provocation, we replied with solidarity and resistance and we survived. We do exactly the same now in the knowledge that the people of Greece will be the eventual winners. This is the message I send to Mrs Merkel and to Mr Schäuble stating at the same time that I always remain a friend of the German people and an admirer of their great contribution to science, philosophy and art especially music! The best proof of this admiration is that I entrusted with the entire collection of my compositions to two German publishers Schott and Breitkopf renowned world publishers and my association with them is very friendly.
They threatened us with expulsion from Europe, If Europe means the Merkel-Sarkozi saga, we do not want them, ten times over.
Today Sunday February 12, I am preparing to take part, together with Manolis Glezos, the hero that de-mast the swastika from the Acropolis signalling the start of, not only the Greek but the pan European resistance against Hitler.. Our streets and squares will be filled with hundreds of thousands citizens demonstrating against the government and the troika.
I listen yesterday the Banker- Prime Minister proclaiming that “
We have reached almost zero”. Who, however ensured of this in only two years?
They did! The same people that instead of been in prison, are now blackmailing the members of Parliament into signing the new memorandum worst than the previous one, that is going to be implemented by the same people using the same methods that got the country to
Zero in two years.
Why ? Because this is the demand of the IMF and the Euro group. Threatening us that if we do not obey, we shall be led to bankruptcy… Here is the logic of the illogical. All these circles that in fact hate us (foreigners and Greeks) and are singly responsible for the dramatic state they led the country, are threatening, are blackmailing, with the sole purpose of continuing on their course of destruction, in other words to take us beyond zero to our total disappearance.
We have survived under very adverse conditions through the centuries and it is certain that if, by force, they lead us a step before death, the Greeks, not only will survive but also they will be re-born. At this moment, I have dedicated all my strength to the task of dynamically unite the Greek people. I try to convince everyone that the “troika” and the IMF are not an one way street, that there is another solution to the problem. This is to change drastically the route of the Nation and turn to Russia for financial cooperation and the creation of joint ventures that will help us to develop the natural wealth of the country with conditions that will safeguard our National interest. In as far as Europe is concerned, I that we shall stop buying military hardware from Germany and France. Likewise we shall do all that is possible to make Germany pay the outstanding war compensation that together with the interest could be as high as
500 billion Euros.
The only power that can materialize these revolutionary changes are the people of Greece united in a gigantic front of
resistance and solidarity to throw out the “troika” (IMF and European Banks) from the Country. At the same time all their illegal actions, would be considered as never done (loans, debts, taxes, purchases of National wealth) Of course, their Greek collaborators that have already being sentenced in the minds of the Greek people as traitors, must be punished. To this cause (the union of the Greek people in one frond) I am totally committed and I believe that in the end, I shall be vindicated. I took up arms against Hitler’s occupation. I become familiar with the dungeons of Gestapo. I was sentenced by the Germans to death and I was saved as by miracle. In 1967 I created
ΠΑΜ (PRF) the first resistance organization against the military Junta. I battled in “illegality. I was arrested and imprisoned in the “slaughter house” of the junta. Finally I survived again!
Today I am 87 years old and most likely I shall not leave to see the salvation of my beloved homeland. BUT I SHALL DIE WITH MY CONCIENCE AT PEACE, for I continue to do my duty to the ideals of Freedom and justice to the end.
